Tensile has collaborated on construction projects across Australia over the past 12 months, with many of these achieving architectural, design or landscape awards and commendations in NSW and Victoria.

1. Workshop, Sydney
Achievements:
- Commercial Architecture Award, 2021 NSW Architecture Awards.
- Finalist in INDE Awards for Best Workspace.
Architects: BatesSmart.
Description:
Workshop is a steel and glass multi-storey commercial building in Pyrmont featuring a central atrium and glass ceiling. The atrium features a series of hanging planters weighing up to 260kg each, all suspended beneath the glazed skylight.
Tensile’s role in the project was the design and installation of the stainless-steel supports for the planters – a challenging venture considering it involved the hanging of heavy objects from a glass ceiling! You can read more about this project on our project page .
2. Collins Arch, Melbourne
Achievements:
- Sir Osborn McCutcheon Award for Commercial Architecture, 2021 Victorian Architecture Awards.
- Commendation in the Urban Design category, 2021 Victorian Architecture Awards.
Architects: Woods Bagot and SHoP.
Description:
Collins Arch is a sustainable development comprising two mixed-use towers connected by an elevated bridge. For this project, Tensile worked with Fytogreen to create the green facades that form part of the complex’s shared sky garden.
3. Taronga Zoo African Savannah, Sydney
Achievements:
- Urban Design Commendation, 2021 NSW Architecture Awards.
Architects: Tonkin Zulaikha Greer.
Description:
Taronga’s African Savannah, which opened in 2020, mimics a natural African landscape and is home to the zoo’s lions, giraffes, zebras, meerkats and Fennec foxes.
Tensile installed the lion enclosure’s Webnet mesh barrier, designed to allow visitors an up-close experience of the animals in complete safety. Read more about this project here .
4. Platinum Tower, Melbourne
Achievements:
- Innovation Award of Excellence for green facade, 2021 CTBUH Awards.
Architects: Aspect Studios.
Description:
Platinum Tower in Melbourne’s Southbank is a ten-storey luxury residential complex. Tensile installed the building’s nine-level green facade which is 1,700m 2 in size and features five species of climbing plants. More detail on the installation can be found on our project page .
5. Latrobe University Student Accommodation, Melbourne
Achievements:
- Residential Architecture Award for Multiple Housing Category, 2021 Victoria Architecture Awards.
Architects: JCB Architects.
Description:
This is a unique timber structure, designed to provide beautiful calming spaces for residents and non-resident students.
Tensile designed and installed the interior mesh barriers, which provide the fall protection required of a multi-storey building while allowing for views, natural light, and full use of upper-level spaces.
6. Sales Ring Playground, Sydney
Achievements:
- Award of Excellence for Play Spaces, 2021 National Landscape Architecture Awards.
Architects: Arcadia Landscape Architecture.
Description:
This playground is designed around the old horse sales ring at Newmarket and provides an array of tactile play experiences for children of all ages.
Webnet mesh forms the barriers and safety screens, which in turn perfectly illustrate the material’s combination of robustness, malleability, and transparency.
7. BMW and MINI, Sydney
Achievements:
- Commercial Architecture Commendation, 2021 NSW Architecture Awards.
Architects: SJB.
Description:
This redevelopment of the Rushcutters Bay BMW site features cantilevered white concrete slabs, glass walls, and a black metal facade.
The customer hub has a climbing garden, designed to provide customers with an oasis retreat. Tensile’s Webnet mesh acts as the trellis for the climbing plants while simultaneously acting as a safety barrier.
